Unemployed sentenced to 12 months for mobile phone theft

Techiman, Sept. 3, GNA - Mr. Issah Abdul Wahab, a magistrate at Tuobodom in Techiman Municipality, has warned that he would give severe punishment to anybody arraigned before his court for stealing mobile phones.

He was pronouncing a sentence of 12 month imprisonment in hard labour on Kwadwo Effah, a 28 year old unemployed, who snatched a GHC 45.00 Nokia mobile phone from a three year-old child at Akrofrom in the municipality and sold it for GH¢15.00

Effah pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing the phone.

Mr. Wahab expressed regret about the increasing theft of mobile phones in the area and advised parents to encourage their children to be serious with their education instead of exposing them to frivolous activities.

Prosecuting, Police Sergeant David Alhassan told the court that on August 17 this year, the child's mother Madam Akosua Yeboah gave the phone to the child whilst she took her bath.

The mother later heard the child crying and when she asked what was wrong the child told her Effah had collected the phone from her and bolted.

The prosecutor said Madam Yeboaah reported the matter to the unit committee member in the area and they traced Effah to a hide-out where he admitted stealing the phone, but said he had sold it to someone he could not easily identify.

He was immediately arrested and handed over to the police.
